How Many Totes Do I Need to Move? (Studio to 4-Bedroom Guide)

Milwaukee Tote Rentals·Published September 13, 2026·Updated September 13, 2026

Most Milwaukee moves need between 30 and 100 totes, depending on home size and storage. The most common mistake is underestimating — basements, garages, and closets add more than people expect. When in doubt, round up: extra totes sit empty, but running short mid-move is a real problem.

Room-by-room breakdown

If you want to estimate more precisely, count room by room. These ranges are based on average household contents — your actual count will vary based on how much stuff you have.

Bedroom 8–15 totes
Clothes, linens, nightstands. More for larger closets.
Living room 5–10 totes
Books, decor, electronics accessories, throw pillows.
Kitchen 8–15 totes
Dishes, pots, appliances, pantry items.
Dining room 3–6 totes
Linens, serving pieces, decor.
Home office 5–10 totes
Files, books, equipment, supplies.
Basement (finished) 10–20 totes
The most underestimated room in any house.
Garage 8–15 totes
Tools, seasonal equipment, bikes, storage bins.
Attic storage 5–15 totes
Depends heavily on how much you store up there.
Bathrooms (all) 2–5 totes
Toiletries, towels, medicine cabinet.
Closets / misc. 3–8 totes
Coats, seasonal items, cleaning supplies.

The spaces people always underestimate

In our experience delivering totes across Milwaukee, these three spaces are consistently underestimated — and they're the main reason people run short mid-move:

Finished basements

A finished lower level with a home office, gym, media room, or hobby space can easily add 15–20 totes to a move. Most people think "it's a basement, it's not that much" — but furnished finished spaces fill up fast.

Garages

Tools, seasonal equipment, bikes, sports gear, gardening supplies, storage bins, and the random assortment of things that live in garages add up to 8–15 totes for a typical two-car garage. A three-car garage with a workshop can hit 20.

Kitchen pantries and cabinets

Kitchens are dense. Dishes, pots, small appliances, pantry staples, and the accumulated supplies of a household kitchen typically need 10–15 totes on their own. Don't count a kitchen as one room.

Milwaukee-specific sizing notes

Milwaukee's housing stock has some characteristics that affect tote counts:

Older Milwaukee bungalows and two-flats often have full unfinished basements used as primary storage. These can hold a surprising amount — 15–25 totes worth.

Wauwatosa and West Allis homes from the 1940s–60s tend to have more storage than their square footage suggests — built-in cabinets, cedar closets, dedicated utility rooms.

Brookfield and Waukesha subdivision homes from the 1980s–2000s run large. Four-bedroom colonials with finished basements and three-car garages routinely need 90–100 totes.

Downtown Milwaukee condos and apartments usually have less storage than suburban homes of the same bedroom count — but factor in any exterior storage unit.

Common questions

How many totes do I need to move a studio apartment?

A studio apartment typically needs 20–30 totes. Our Apartment package (30 totes) is sized for studios and 1-bedroom apartments. If your studio has significant closet storage or a storage unit, add 5–10 totes.

How many totes do I need for a 2 bedroom apartment or home?

A 2-bedroom home or apartment typically needs 35–50 totes. Our Home package (50 totes) covers most 2-bedroom moves comfortably. Homes with basements should plan for 50–60.

How many totes do I need for a 3 bedroom house?

A 3-bedroom house typically needs 50–70 totes. Our Home package (50) works for lean 3-bedroom moves; our Large Home package (75) is the safer choice for most. Add totes for a finished basement, garage, or attic.

How many totes do I need for a 4 bedroom house?

A 4-bedroom house typically needs 75–100 totes. Our Large Home (75) and Estate (100) packages cover this range. Homes with three-car garages, finished basements, and dedicated storage rooms often need the full 100.

What is the most common mistake people make when sizing their tote order?

Underestimating storage spaces — basements, garages, and attics. Most people count bedrooms and forget that a finished basement or a two-car garage can add 15–25 totes to a move. Always round up.
